It has been a thousand years since Lessa, F'lar, Jaxom, and the other dragonriders took the trip to the Red Star and knocked it out of course. Dragonkind has thrived, and the dragons have become even larger and more intelligent, with variations in color unheard of in ancient Pern due to the experimental attempts of those discovering new sciences. Many ancient traditions that had arisen because of Thread have been forgotten. Thread has not fallen at all, just as AIVAS promised.
Most Holds have forgotten the old rules and practices, although a very few still follow the traditions. More and more Holds have sprung up, many in the Southern Continent due to the more temperate climate. Some Holds grew to despise the dragonriders despite the fact that they no longer had to tithe to them, resenting the Searches that took their young. Most, however, are kind to the dragonriders.
The crafthalls also flourished, rediscovering many old techniques. The Minecraft, in particular, has undergone great discovery in the use of watch-whers. These dragon cousins have been found to be Impressable. Other improvements in technique and machinery occurred throughout all crafts, with fewer and fewer secrets lost to time and tradition. Canines and felines have been domesticated, and also attach to their owners, although in a manner distinctly different from dragonkind.
But one day, the sky darkened, as if to rain. From the clouds fell not pure rain, but deadly thread; some of the capsules had survived the deadly 'germ' planted on the Red Star, and fell once again, mutated. A stray comet had knocked the cruel star back into alignment, and once again the deadly spores fell, this time impervious to the grubs that seeded the land.
Thousands died with that first fall of Thread on a planet that had thought to see the end of the menace; by the time dragon wings were mustered, the riders, no longer versed in the ways of fighting Thread, lost more beasts and riders than ever before documented. It seemed that Pern was doomed, for so many had died in that first Fall, so many crops had been eaten by the spores.
One Queen, Rynqueth, had laid a clutch and was Weyrbound, and as Thread ceased to fall in the second week due to a newly erratic orbit which brought the Red Star near enough to rain down Thread with a sevenday's interval between falls, her eggs grew ready to hatch. A message was sent out to the Holdbound survivors: more Candidates would be needed to Impress at this Hatching.
The Hatching went well, and a few weeks later, Rynqueth rose again, to be caught by the bronze Nenoth and his rider F'len. This shocked no one, as the two riders were in love before the flight. More eggs were laid on the sands, and more Candidates Impressed, the Weyr beginning to be rejuvenated. Life went on, with the riders learning again how to fight Thread.
Several months later, after a crime spree, the single remaining Weyr split into three: Corazon, Illea Island, and Claret Weyr. But soon after the foundation of these Weyrs, Rynqueth and Athora disappeared; later, they reunited again, into Maelthra Delmah Weyr. The Weyrwoman and her queen reappeared, revealing that they had gone on a mission to aid Athora in her youth. Another clutch was laid, from which hatched the bizarre mutated Yin-Yang dragon Skitzith.
A short few Turns later, the pair disappeared again; they are suspected to be forever gone /between/. Rynqueth left her final clutch on the sands in the guardianship of Nenoth and F'len. The Weyr's inhabitants have thinned again; some have gone to found new Weyrs, some have even suicided at Athora's death and the unending prospect of Thread. The demoralized Weyr had only the clutch.
It Hatched, and in the months following, once the Weyrlings had matured, F'len announced that he was turning the Weyr over to the rider of the young queen dragon from Rynqueth's previous clutch, Marielle. She ruled the Weyr undisputed until, a few months later, F'len too disappeared. Most believed that he had followed Athora into /between/, unable to live without his love.
Rynqueth's final clutch had yielded another up-and-coming leader: Nadria, rider of the gold Xenith. The pair began to press for power with F'len gone, and Marielle had no plans to yield her authority, but when Xenith rose, she had no choice but to step aside. The riders demanded a clutching queen, and Skitzith had not yet risen, had not yet given them a clutch to rejuvenate the Weyr.
For a while, Maelthra Delmah had both Weyrwoman and Weyrleader; Xenith had been flown by the brooding rider R'dit's bronze Aldeth. But the young pair fell to ruin. Nadria's arrogance and R'dit's cruelty all but emptied the Weyr, and when R'dit fell to Thread, few mourned. Nadria, guilty, handed the reins back over to Marielle, awaiting Xenith's clutch as her only source of redemption. It was not enough for others in the Weyr, however, who had endured Nadria's self-absorbed cruelty, and poison was somehow slipped into the once-Weyrwoman's cup. It left Xenith pale and fading, stranded on the sands until the eggs hatched and she could join her rider and her onetime Weyrmate, and Marielle as the warden of the hardening clutch, watching, waiting.
A queen egg sat in the midst of Xenith's first and final clutch, and the young Weyrwoman watched it with apprehension. Would the next queen's rider be like her mother's before her? Or would someone who could truly lead the Weyr emerge?
Now the Weyrwoman watches, sending out a Search to revitalize the Weyr. Some riders have returned, hearing of the demise of the former leaders; most have stayed away. Will Maelthra Delmah live on?
