Disclaimer: I can not be blamed for any bleeding of the eyes that may occur while reading my physical description.
Name: Dorian
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Rank: Candidate, Journeyman Harper
Pets: (3)
Name: Tundra*
Animal: Female Runnerbeast
Appearance: Tundra is a snowy white color, broken up by small spans of brown. She also has a small patch of black on her rear left hoof.
Personality: Having been Dorian's companion for a great many Turns she's rather docile. She's very responsive to the lightest twitch of the reins, but she's also spoiled. Every time Dorian comes to visit, she butts up against him for a treat which, invariably, he has.
Name: Sadie
Animal/Color: Gold Fire Lizard
Appearance: She's a warm golden color, closest described by the color of Rubat sinking into the horizon on a balmy summer day.
Personality: Like all of Dorian's pets, Sadie is absolutely spoiled. Unlike Tundra and Darts, Sadie knows she deserves to be. She's only mildly trained, she'll quietly sit on his shoulder or maybe help deliver a message. The only way Dorian achieved this was to appeal to her slightly snotty attitude. After all, a Queen such as she, couldn't be making a racket, or not know how to deliver such important messages could she?
Name: Darts
Animal: Female Feline
Appearance: She's a black feline, with gray streaks running horizontally through her fur. Her somber color is only broken up by muted strains of orange and rusty red. She'll never grow to the size of her wild companions, but she's a decent rodent catcher and a better companion.
Personality: Darts is Dorian's silent shadow she follows him most everywhere. It's partially his fault for he was prone to set her up in Tundra's saddlebag as he readied himself for a trip. Or he'd pick her up on his way out and carry her on his shoulders, like some regal adornment. She's not shy about voicing whether or not she feels neglected or that some food Dorian thinks is his, is actually hers.
Dragon Preference 1: Brown
Dragon Preference 2: Amber
Dragon Preference 3: Blue
Family:
Father: Master Gemsmith Jim
Mother: Master Chef Sedalia
Sister: Older Cathline
Brother: Toddler Kallan
Appearance:
Like most of Pern Dorian is a brown eyed, brown haired person. Despite his wealthy status, he wears rather normal clothing. The only way to tell is by the slightly better cloth. He wishes his face wasn't so easily readable, but that does make his Harpering easier. He stands a little tall at 5'3 and usually can be found in shorts.
Personality:
Perhaps it is because of his parents, or maybe he was born this way, but Dorian is rather artistic. Not in the drawing sense, more in the write music, shape metal, cook meals, devise plans for the betterment of the Hold, way. All of his gifts seem geared towards helping people or making them happy. That works well, for he'd rather quietly help people than help himself.
Dorian comes off as a little aloof or reserved as a first impression. He doesn't like to tell a lot of himself to those he doesn't consider friends. However, he isn't one to be overly suspicious or hard to befriend. It's much easier for him if he's doing something, talking can seem to befuddle him, almost as if he not used to having normal conversation. Which, considering his history, isn't too far from the truth.
Dorian has a strong set of values which he won't compromise for anyone. His parents helped instill in him a deep sense of honor and what's right. He may rebel if something seems to conflict with his inner code, but if not, he's content to be a follower. Dorian isn't a natural born follower or leader, nor is he a loner. He just sizes the situation up, learning what he can of the people and situation before figuring out how he fits in it all. Sometimes he just can't fit in and that's fine with him, he moves on and out.
Dorian is unusually perceptive of people. Not because of any wondrous gift, but because of his tenancy to stop and just analyze people before he moves forward. He doesn't necessarily do anything with the information, just moves it around in his mind, like a puzzle to figure out. This can cause him to just sit/stand around dreamy eyed as he ponders different people/situations. It also makes him rather good at solving solutions as he is always thinking.
History:
Dorian grew up comfortably within Salraldi Hold, one of the major Holds that tithed to Oresia Weyr. Being a son of a Master gemsmith and the Master chef of the Hold's family, Dorian's family was well off to say the least. He never wanted for anything, clothes, food, shelter, and love was there in abundance. His parents had had a tough time getting to where they were though. They made sure to instill in each of their children a sense of duty and pride in their work. Both Dorian and Cathline were privately tutored by the Master Harper at the Hold and made to learn bits and pieces of each craft. Sedalia had wanted to make sure her children could make an informed decision when it came time to pick their craft. It also wouldn't hurt to be well rounded in any case.
Having seen no evidence in his eldest child in following his craft (other than to wear it) he turned to Dorian to teach his craft. Not wanting to disappoint his father Dorian learned how to gemsmith. He never became more than an apprentice for he hadn't the passion for it. However he did enjoy the company of his father while he helped out in the workshop.
While not encased in studies from the Harper, his mom, or father he enjoyed wandering the hilly landscape beyond the Hold. Because of his tendency to disappear and not reappear until well pass dark, because he 'wondered a little too far' his mother gifted him with a runnerbeast on his twelfth Turn. That way, she reasoned, he wouldn't have an excuse to miss the meals she worked hard to make him.
Dorian named the runnerbeast Tundra in honor of his recent learning of Pern's environments. Tundra had a snowy coat with flecks of brown spotting her flanks. It wasn't the best and well thought out name (he was 12), but his Harper was pleased that Dorian was at least listening to the lessons. The boy always fidgeted, wanting to move.
A Turn rounded and still Dorian hadn't chosen his path. This caused his parents great distress as they'd done all they could to prepare him for any apprenticeship he might want to go into. His sister was already well into her studies to become a Seamstress. While they'd wanted something with more prestige for her, at least she had chosen something. She was rather gifted with design of clothes anyway. Many nights he'd stay up late talking to his parents trying to defend himself. He didn't have a reason really for delaying, he just wasn't sure what he wanted to do. He wasn't about to choose something if he wasn't sure, life was too precious to waste in such a way.
Dorian had a hideaway within a heavily wooded lake. It was no surprise that after such a talk with his parents that he'd be found there, leaning against a tree with Tundra happily cropping the grass. On one such night a lone traveling trader was venturing into town. Ever curious Dorian followed. It was there he found a reason to choose his career now. The trader had a gold flitt. It was then that Dorian decided he wanted a fire lizard, and not just any color, no, only a golden one would do. Sadly the traveler didn't have a fire lizard clutch, and if she did, Dorian certainly didn't have the coin. What she did have was a rare feline litter. Apparently in the south, they were trying to breed domesticated felines. It was viewed as worth it as felines were good at sniffing out tunnel snakes and other such rodents.
When the crowd dispersed one was left. A small runt of a thing, barely worth the trader's time to transport as she wouldn't be too much help with the rodent population. When Dorian asked what she'd do to the kit, she matter of factly stated she'd probably just cull it, since it wasn't worth much. That decided Dorian, he bought her and named her Darts, because of the streaking pattern of her fur.
That night, silently stroking a purring Darts, he decided to become a Harper. It was a respected profession and he wasn't a bad singer. He definitely wouldn't mind learning the different instruments and the traveling would be fun. He'd seen a taste of it while talking to the trader. After all, she'd shown him felines and flitters in one night and talked about many more wondrous things. What would he see once he passed the Journeyman's tables?
It would be four long Turns before Dorian received his Journeyman knots. In celebration, he used the coin earned in his apprenticeship to buy a gold flitter egg. He was rather apprehensive due to the fact one can never be totally sure what is in the egg, especially with the mutation going on. Happily he found Sadie in the egg. He wasn't too thrilled when he discovered the attitude attached with such a color. He suddenly became much more respected of the responsibilities that came with being a Weyrwoman. Not all is as it's cracked up to be, he guessed.
It had been barely a few sevenday since he donned the Journeyman knots for a Haper when he was Searched by an old blue and placed at Oresia. He was a little upset that he wasn't going to be a Master Harper (or at the very least it would be delayed), but a chance to be a dragon rider? Oh, that's the stuff of legends.
* Tundra and Darts won't be coming to the Weyr, she's just there to show how spoiled Dorian is. lol
